CONTROLLER (CONSTRUCTION)
About the role:
Ledgent Finance & Accounting's client is actively seeking a highly skilled and experienced Business Unit Controller to join their dynamic team in Menlo Park, CA. This pivotal role is responsible for overseeing all accounting and controls associated with a rapidly growing business, projected to generate over $1 billion in annual revenues. The successful candidate will be a key member of the financial team, managing a staff of 10 to 15, including three direct reports.
Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership across the business unit for all aspects of accounting and controlling operations, leading and developing a high-performing team within the finance organization.
- Manage the monthly closing process to ensure timely preparation of accurate financial information, in accordance with GAAP, and produce discussion and analysis commentary on changes in numbers and financial position.
- Oversee the compilation and reporting of financial information to the parent entity throughout the financial close cycles.
- Oversee Business Unit cash and banking activities, including collections, disbursements, and cash forecasting.
- Review revenue recognition through the work-in-place process and confirm information is supported by operational profit forecast.
- Establish and manage monthly monitoring of critical internal control activities, ensuring compliance with public company requirements and practices (SOX compliant), and proactively manage financial risks.
- Drive productivity throughout the finance function, focusing on automating accounting activities and leading productivity improvements.
- Maintain proficiency with technical accounting considerations, including revenue recognition, accounting for unapproved change orders and claims, and other relevant GAAP standards.
- Provide critical financial and operational information to executive management and make actionable recommendations to improve financial results.
- Participate in special projects and ad hoc requests.
Qualifications
- BA degree in Finance or Accounting is required, CPA preferred but not required.
- 15+ years of progressive management experience in accounting and finance in the construction industry.
- Thorough understanding of the full construction industry revenue recognition process, including WIP reporting and percentage of completion calculations.
- Construction operations experience preferred.
- Demonstrated hands-on approach and success in a team-based environment, with both strategic and tactical abilities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with all levels within the organization.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision, be proactive, and take initiative.
- Capable of working in a complex, fast-paced environment with frequently changing priorities, managing competing priorities effectively.
- Critical thinking skills with the capability to generate consistently accurate and useful reports, and enthusiasm for translating data into actionable insight.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to achieve results through delegation, producing quality work in a fast-paced environment.
- Results-oriented, setting goals and priorities that maximize the use of resources available to consistently deliver quality results.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to drive change while creating an environment of rigor, discipline, and accountability.

Additional Details
Expected annual salary range for this job is $195,000 - $250,000 based on experience.
